Golden evening in Glasgow for team Speedo

It was a golden evening in Glasgow on day one of the XX Commonwealth Games for Team Speedo.

Emma McKeon (AUS) had a very busy session winning gold in the Women’s 200m Freestyle lowering the Commonwealth Games record she posted in the heats and also breaking the Oceania record tonight. Team mate Bronte Barratt won the bronze medal, with Lauren Boyle (New Zealand) coming home in fourth position and South African Karin Prinsloo eighth.

The Men’s 400m Freestyle was won by Ryan Cochrane (CAN), defending the title he won in Delhi four years ago and breaking his own Canadian record which has stood for six years. David McKeon (AUS) followed him home for the silver medal with James Guy (ENG) taking the bronze, breaking his English and British records in the process also. Mack Horton (AUS) finished fourth in his debut senior competition, giving Speedo athletes the top four spots in the final.

Home crowd favourite Michael Jamieson (Scotland), won the silver medal in the men’s 200m breaststroke, just as he did at the London 2012 Olympics. Australian Christian Sprenger came home eighth. Matthew Cowdrey(Australia) delivered the silver medal also in the Men’s 100m Freestyle Para-Sport S9, adding to the Speedo medal tally.

Emma McKeon ended the evening with another gold medal joiningMelanie Schlanger to help Australia power to victory in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event, smashing the world record in the process. They were joined by the Campbell sisters Bronte and Cate.

In semi-final action, Alia Atkinson (JAM) broke the Commonwealth Games record for the second time of the day, leading through the qualifiers for the Women’s 50m breaststroke final, which will take place on Friday evening. Whilst defending Women’s 100m butterfly champion Alicia Coutts (AUS) qualified third fastest to advance into that final. Joining her as the fourth fastest is teammate Emma McKeon (AUS), with this event sandwiched between her two gold medal events tonight.

A great night’s action, with more medals to come tomorrow.
