Danie Marais

Speedo SA has signed up rising open water star Danie Marais as a brand ambassador.

Twenty year old Marais is one of SA’s fast rising open water stars, and recently placed third at the world’s biggest open water swim, The Midmar Mile, close behind fellow Speedo ambassadors Chad Ho and Troyden Prinsloo.

Marais began swimming competitively at eight and by 14 he was a senior national swimmer. In 2005 he joined the South African Open Water squad and has attained podium finishes  every year since at the Open Water Senior Nationals.

By 15 he was SA’s 3km open water champ.

In 2009 Marais was selected to represent SA at the FINA world champs in Rome and two years later in Shanghai. In 2010 he represented SA at the All-African games in Morocco where he won silver in the 5km open water, and gold in the relay pool event.

He narrowly missed selection for the 2013 Olympics.

Marais is currently in training for the FINA World Championships in Barcelona in July and August this year and trains on average four to five hours a day, clocking up about 70km a week.

Speedo SA has signed a kit sponsorship with Marais for the next year.

Marais said he was honoured: “It’s fantastic to have such an incredible brand support my swimming efforts and my goal of medals at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics.”

“The technology which Speedo offers from swimwear to equipment will certainly help improve my swimming ability. It’s also a tremendous privilege to be associated with the world’s leading swimming brand alongside heroes such as Michael Phelps.”

Speedo SA Brand President, Stuart Hopwood, said he was thrilled to be associated with Marais. “He is an inspiration to other youngsters and has already proven himself at such a young age. We look forward to playing a small part in helping him reach his goals.”
